Some old, and erroneous, information is perpetuated in the review
"...the First Symphony (June 2011) and the Second (March 2012). Confession time: though I’m a Bruckner enthusiast I’ve always found the first two symphonies less interesting than the rest of the nine. Though he already had two symphonies to his credit by the time he completed the First in 1866 – the so-called ‘O’ and ‘00’ symphonies –..."
This is incorrect. The chronological sequence of composition is Symphony in F-Minor 1863; Symphony No. 1 in C-Minor 1866; and Symphony in D-Minor 1869.
For decades scholars assumed that the D-Minor dated from 1864, until later careful scholarship and examination of the score definitively established 1869 as the year of composition of the entire work. In matter of fact, Bruckner at first assigned the D-Minor Symphony "Nr. 2", falling after his official "Nr. 1". Sometime during the composition of the following symphony, in C-Minor of 1872, he cancelled the previous Nr. 2 - annulled it in the original German inscription on the title page - and assigned Nr. 2 to the new work. The Symphony in D-Minor was retained in the composer's library and never destroyed - thank goodness, because it is a masterwork in its own right.
The original Querstand release was SACD in high-resolution mulitchannel 5.0 surround sound, a co-production with the MDR Leipzig Radio. The Accentus re-release is, alas, standard CD format.
