I heard the Abravenel recordings in the 70s. He was a fine musician and he made the Utah Symphony sound like a good band. His Mahler was also very good.
I agree about the early Berglund set - now there was a great conductor.
As far as Sibelius is concerned, I urge people to get to know the Sanderling set. His 3rd and 4th are magnificent, the others simply very good. What's interesting is that where Sanderling came from and where he moved to, for that matter, there was absolutely no interest in Sibelius. As Sanderling put it, he had to come to this music by himself: I urge people to listen to it.
I am not familiar with the earlier Berglund set, Mike, but as it is a favourite of yours I have ordered it (not on Warner but the Dutch Royal Classics label, as it was indeed very cheap!). I'll let you know what I think.
Another excellent appraisal from Mr Moore. Can I just point out that the even better Berglund/BSO set is available for around £10 and it includes a few extras.
I have 18 full sets and this is the one I keep returning to, although I have high hopes for Rouvali.
