I don't know about Huber and his indebtedness to Raff, but plenty of other composers came to mind when I recently heard a record of Summer Night by Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck (1886-1957) including Grieg, Sibelius, Delius, Elgar and Wagner. The disc might be a good one to use for a "Guess what composer that sounds like" quiz. I have to say, though, that I rather enjoyed the piece over and above the spot-the-influence aspect of it and propose to look out for more of Schoeck's music. And of course we have Honegger, Bloch and Frank Martin to prove that all Swiss composers didn't have to employ "eclectic" means as inspiration for their works.

Raff isn't just a composer who might come to mind when listening to some of Huber's music- he's also on the list of fellow Swiss, and better-known than some of those others :) Interesting review- Now let's have Huber's one remaining unrecorded symphony (the A major symphony from between nos. 1 and 2...)
