I agree, too, with much of what he’s written. The playing on this disc is quite fabulous. Amongst the best of any Rachmaninoff disc. The Isle of the Dead is the standout performance here - I think the best since the Ashkenazy (although neither is the top recommendation in the end). You can swim in DG’s sound on these discs it’s so deep and warm - very unusual for this label. The Decca for Ashkenazy is much more vivid, brighter, but also somewhat resonant in my view. The Concertgebouw must have sounded absolutely enormous in the studio when that recording was made.
