Fraser-Simson Songs by A A MIlne
Posted by Paul Corfield Godfrey on November 8, 2023, 11:26 am
In his review of the EM release of these songs, William Kreindler refers to the discs as the first complete recording of all 67 Fraser-Simson settings of A A Milne poems. In fact it appeared at almost exactly the same time as another version of the complete songs from Prima Facie, which includes not only all the songs featured on the EM release but also Fraser-Simson's settings of poems from Alice in Wonderland, many of which are also receiving their first recording in modern times. Whereas the EM release assigns all the songs to one singer, the Prima Facie set distributes them among seven singers (all from Welsh National Opera) which pays real dividends in a dramatic piece such as The King's Breakfast where the various roles can be shared around. I would very much hope that a review of this alternative set will shortly appear on MW.
