I have usually despaired with EMI's transfers of their old 1940s and 1950s recordings - the Cantelli and Karajan/Philharnonia ones being amongst the worst offenders (the Furtwängler/Menuhin Beethoven VC is another).
You may also want to give a listen to these Menuhin/Furtwängler restorations, especially the Brahms: https://www.youtube.com/@RS3DArchive/search?query=%2BFurtw%C3%A4ngler%20%2BMenuhin
And if you're a fan of pre-70's Karajan, these are also sonically excellent. Especially the Schumann. It's the best-sounding Kapell recording I've ever heard: https://www.youtube.com/@RS3DArchive/search?query=%2Bkarajan
