Quilter performed by Gilchrist

I share John Quinn’s admiration for the artistry of James Gilchrist’s singing of Quilter. Even so, Gilchrist’s voice is not what it once was - as The Gramophone review points out. And in the case of some of the songs he sings, there are, I think, more satisfying performances by other singers. If you compare Gilchrist’s recording of “Love’s Philosophy” with the recordings of it by Janet Baker, Bryn Terfel and Gervase Elwes, I think you will see what I have in mind. I also tend to prefer Mark Stone’s singing of Quilter to Gilchrist’s.
