I also largely agree with your assessment of the Souliotis Norma, though I am slightly less disposed towards Del Monaco's shouty Pollione than you or Ralph. However, I am not sure that the set has been underrated so much as forgotten, probably because it was strangely not recorded complete.
Thank you, Mr Tsaras, for your interesting review of Callas' remastered Norma. I agree with you; the Mira o Norma is one of the magic moments in all of recorded music history. Even as a teenager, I was forced to stop in my tracks and listen to it. And I still feel that way. Mr Moore did put me on to something about Norma, though. That's Souliotis's recording. I like everything about it; the recording, conductor, cast; Souliotis is always capable, and confident. I like her voice. Yes, there is no Mira O Norma magic like Serafin, but Cossotto is hardly a nobody. Del Monaco and Cava are as good as any, and Varviso paces things expertly. This is a shamefully underrated set, which says a lot about our own and the industry's snobberies.
