I just wanted to share how impressed I was by the recently released recording of the above-mentioned opera with Lise Davidson and Gerald Finley under Edward Gardner with the Norwegian National Orchestra and Chorus. I would love to hear some thoughts on it from the reviewers on this site. I personally found it to be excellent, and I thought it represented perhaps the best Wagnerian recording so far this millennium. Gerald Finley is excellent and always gorgeous of voice even if he is no Hotter when it comes to vocal power. Lise Davidson is really powerful and sounds strikingly similar to Astrid Varnay in almost every way, and Davidson is by no means the lesser singer. The supporting cast is surprisingly good, especially the wonderful Steuermann who sings almost as well as Wunderlich did in 1959. I would love to see some reviews on this site for other opinions, but I personally felt heartened by the high quality it showed across the board.
