Halvor Haug (1952-2025), Norwegian symphonist, has died
Posted by Colin Mackie on June 20, 2025, 8:13 pm
I am sorry to hear that Halvor Haug died a couple of weeks ago. Until very serious ill health made it impossible for him to compose after 2002 Haug has built the reputation of being one of Norway's most distinguished living composers. Haug composed five symphonies in a tough but accessible, "modern romantic" style. He studied with Erik Bergmann and Einar Englund in Finland and Robert Simpson in the UK, indeed Simpson was a great admirer of Haug's music- and it took a lot to earn Simpson's admiration! The first three symphonies were on CD and could still be found out there I would imagine. They are coupled with a number of other impressive orchestral works. I have always felt that it is something of a tragedy that despite having at least four very fine orchestras the Norwegians should seem to be reticent about promoting their music, certainly in comparison with the other Nordic countries. Those who appreciate the music of the North are encouraged to seek out the music of this very fine composer whose voice is now silenced
