Graham Parlett

Sad to report the recent death of Graham Parlett - an impassioned and diligent friend of British music especially of Arnold Bax. His name turns up in many a Dutton and Chandos recording project and not just in the Bax context.
Graham wrote the OUP Catalogue of Bax's music and was also working on a second edition which I hope might reach publication. He was a good friend to me and in 1978-86 opened the door to many Bax works that I despaired of ever hearing.
His cassettes courtesy of Royal Mail were listened to avidly: rare works long before the multitude of Bax revivals on CD from 2000 onwards.
He was a generous man and latterly gave me access to minidiscs, reels and cassettes of rare repertoire and broadcasts.
Sadness at his passing and condolences to his family.
Rob

I was deeply saddened to hear of Graham Parlett’s death. I have known Graham for several years. He was always most patient and helpful in responding to my many queries about Arnold Bax. As readers will know, in 1999 he published the essential A Catalogue of the Works of Sir Arnold Bax. This has long been one of my “bedside books”. It is a model of its kind. I know that Graham was updating the script of this book ever since first publication, also adding lots of essential new information. I believe he had the aim of a 2nd edition. It is to be hoped that this might one day bear fruit. I am also grateful for his many realisations and orchestrations of British Music, many of which are available on CD. I occasionally met Graham at musical events and CD launchings. Luckily, I enjoyed a few meals with him in Dulwich and Herne Hill, and found him a charming, knowledgeable and engaging companion. He will be sorely missed in musical circles – and in many other walks of life.
