In Today's DejaReview we present the late Tony Duggan's review of Mahler 6 conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. What an absorbing review, rich in imagery and a real sense of the occasion. How I miss Tony Len

It is as exactly as you write. I had rather promised myself not to re-read it (but caved in) since I am currently writing a companion Mahler 6 to sit beside his. It is one of the more difficult things I have written given the importance of his. There were many fewer recordings around when Tony wrote his survey (a second Tilson Thomas, for example), and some out of print, which are now not. His approach to these Mahler surveys was also a model, one which I have largely chosen to follow: don't spend too much time on the weaker recordings, but go into depth on the stronger ones. And I have deliberately chosen not to read his survey so his conclusions remain entirely his own - as mine will.
Tony and I often agreed over Mahler recordings; often disagreed. We most disagreed over Kubelik. (Tony liked him.) Perhaps our Mahler 6 conclusions will be different, too. You will find out in a few months.
