Very interesting review. I'm in your camp about sound; I still pull down from the shelf some 1940s and 50s CDs, but usually just for a specific reason. I bring shallowness to new depths. As for Cav, I really do have as one of my all-time favourite CDs, Karajan's with Bergonzi. It's perfect, and i'm not a Karajan admirer usually.
One last thing about the congestion you hear on the CD in question. I have a mid-level system, but few of my CDs esp. in the opera, choral, and symphonic repertoire, are without it. I'nm surprised that all the advances haven't solved the issue; or is it just me? It CAN be excellent, as somne of the Solti Ring has demonstrated, but it's often ignored in the editing room, I think.
