Tasmin Little

Posted by Michael Bullivant on October 13, 2024, 12:24 pm

I fear that Jonathan Woolf is wide of the mark in suggesting that Tasmin Little’s recordings of Goerge Lloyd’s violin works were her first. She’d been recording for ten years by then, her first CD was of violin concertos by Bruch and Dvořák on Classics for Pleasure in 1990, and there were at least a dozen more before the Lloyd so she was well used to the constraints and problems of recording by then!

I sometimes wish that 8 and 9 were not so close together on a keyboard. By mistake I'd typed the recording year as '1999' but of course it was 1989. So well spotted, Michael, and I've now amended the date - but this was Tasmin Little's first recording.

Sorry JW, but the lady herself disagrees.

In an interview with Presto, dated 11th April 2019, she states that 2020 would be the thirtieth
anniversary of her first release. She goes on to say that her first disc was a recording of Bruch
and Dvorak, the next disc being Delius - followed by a recording of George Lloyd.

Well, Tuxedo, the Lloyd pieces were recorded on 7 and 8 September 1989 so if you know of an earlier recording by her - because the Bruch/Dvorak and Delius were certainly later - I'd like to know what it is! She must be confusing the order in which she recorded things, and she wouldn't be the first to do that, especially with such a long (and fine) discography to her name.

Thanks, Jonathan, and I should have realised that it was finger slip because I remember that I had the disc before Tasmin made her first visit to Bulawayo in, I think, 1992 when she played the Bruch Concerto as well as giving a superb recital before visiting Hwange and the Victoria Falls. Perhaps the Lloyd was her first recording but only released after the Bruch/Dvořák and Delius?...
