Ein deutsches Requiem
Posted by Jan Arell on May 30, 2025, 6:14 pm
Since I began to listen to classical music in earnest some 40 years ago, Ein deutsches Requiem has been a work I have returned to over and over again. My first recording of it was an LP, conducted by Bernard Haitink. That was when I fell in love with the voice of Gundula Janowitz. Later, I bought the Karajan recording, also with Janowitz, and that has been my favourite for decades.
Until now the Karajan recording has had no competition for me. But the recent Bis release with Bach Collegium Japan is one. It took me less than a minute to adjust to the smaller forces with "authentic" instrument, after that it is sheer bliss. I'm happy to see that it also is one of the Recordings of the Month.
Oh, and I'd very much like to read a Ralph Moore survey of this beautiful, serene and comforting work.

Thanks, Jan - I have toyed with the idea of doing a survey of the Brahms Requiem but shied away because too many recordings are not to my taste - although I share your attachment to that Karajan/Janowitz recording. I'll give it some thought!

The new Suzuki recording on BIS is really special, IMHO. Many thanks to John Quinn for shining a spotlight on it.
