Ralph Moore's Guides

I very much enjoying Ralph Moore's guides and would love it if he would write more about other recordings of the works on his most recommendable/untouchable lists. I know the recordings listed are the ones he regards as the best but would love to read his thoughts on some of the others. I very much enjoy the site, too! best wishes - Ron Cerabona

Thanks for the kind words, Ron. You will appreciate that the reason I took a short cut to my favourites is that there are just so many other options - but I'll take a look and see if I can at least discuss some of those other main contenders. For instance, I have just ordered another "Tannhäuser" (the 1985 studio recording conducted by Haitink) to see if it rivals my favourite Solti set - although of course it is the Dresden, not Paris, version. I'll probably just select a handful of the rival sets for each favourite, as I note, for example, that there are at least 250 recordings of "Tosca" - and while I have certain reserves of "sisu" that is beyond my capabilities.

Hi Ralph - I certainly understand there are a LOT of recordings out there! I was thinking, as you say, of some of the other main contenders- eg major labels, big stars - rather than every last obscure recording of something. Best wishes Ron
