Lee Denham's Mahler 1st Survey
Posted by Steve Luciani on February 18, 2026, 3:34 pm
Noticed since the last update in 2022, there may be only 3 new recordings of the first to listen to, in order to keep this wonderful survey current. I, for one, find it as essential as the Bible.
Bychkov, van Zweden and Järvi, if I'm not mistaken. John Quinn reviewed the Bychkov, but I couldn't find mention of the other two on MusicWeb.
Just pointing it out, in case Lee's looking for something to listen to, in what I'm sure is his copious free time! LOL
Thank you, Steve. You are almost correct for as my esteemed colleague and far more prolific Conspectus Compiler, Ralph Moore, never ceases to remind me, one of his favourite Mahler Firsts with the Prague Festival Orchestra conducted by Pavel Urbanek from 1990 was also missed out from my Survey. Rest assured that the aim is for the Survey for both the Mahler First and Seventh Symphonies are to be updated in 2026, along with a new one for the Eighth which was started last year but unfortunately ground to a halt when I ran out of all that copious free time !
