Being defeated is to embrace this stuff and buy Marvel products sans fixing a problem that goes waaay beyond even Rider. I got my job, kids and a good life. Sure I’ll still be here b###hing and saying my piece. Yet, the worst part is I always had that surety of my vow to buy Marvel again if they did bring back Rich. Man, now… I’m not so sure.
Do I really even want Rich back for somebody like Humphries, Duggan or some WWE wrestler to write?
Do I want Rich back for a cool cameo with Gwenpool or Howard the Duck? (all at $4.99 as well)
I mean they can't even get the helmet stuff right. Do I want him to be based off a film that degraded the Nova Corps into a string of buffoons and tasteless jokes? Maybe Rich Rider can show up and light his farts on fire?
I used to pull 10-12 Marvel books. When I stopped in late summer of 2014, due to Rich Rider, I stopped mostly buying any comics. I've bought a few since then, but nearly all independent stuff. There is some good stuff out there I read like the Dark Matter series and Millar’s Starlight. I bought a lot of old Alien legion, Micronauts, and Starriors comics and have been milking those. They are really solid.
Do I feel like I've missed out?
No…not even a little. The Abnett stuff seemed somewhat decent, but still not the old magic. Secret War was a mess. The new comics seem more oriented on PC stuff than stories. "Black Lives matter" Falcap...yeah pass.
Starting up the blog got me writing more, and I write a lot now in my free time. I worked on the fics and really think I've improved. I got a book finished (mostly). I got a much better one about 3/4 done. My writing juices have been ramped up by this whole mess, so there is some good that’s come of it.
I read more real books now. I figure might as well buy some 4.99 cheap book on my nook by someone who can actually write rather than some marvel comic written by Bendis who can’t spell a name right in a single comic.
I like that trade off. I spend my bucks elsewhere and don’t bat an eye.
“Maybe someday” some Disney exec will see what we 'quitters' have to say about why we stopped buying comics and why we ditched Marvel and Nova (Sam) and things will make sense to them. Maybe in the future they will not allow fans to be treated that way or for editors and creators to diss fans who loved the product. Who knows.
Maybe they'll do it around issue 3 when this new series is probably already out of the top 100. Let’s see where GOTG goes as it was already dropping to record lows in sales with issue #2 of the new series. Clearly, fans are sick of this stuff.
Nova Vol 4 and the mini-series slipped out of the top 100 1 time in 40 issues. By the teens, Sam’s Vol. 5 practically pitched a tent and lived outside the top 100.
For our Rider, Rosemann said sales were rock solid. Nova used to have steady fan support and this regime has chipped away at it.
Guys like Brevoort and Alonso can dismiss us as the "vocal internet" minority, mainly because they are still stuck in 2004 mode when they see the internet as white noise. Clearly, that has changed but they have not. For now, the b###hing about Nova online has resonated with the sales...make no mistake.
So too the sales resonate with the other stuff they have with MANY of Marvel's big properties hijacked by the Brevoort/Alonso regime. Staples like Cap, Hulk, and Thor. Even if initial sales are good, books drop like never before on the charts. This is why books NEED to be Event’d, rebooted, restarted, varient’d, gimmicked and Gwenpoole’d up with cliché make overs. There has got to be a hook to prop up interest in a bad product. The loyal fans who supported properties through thick or thin, (like Rider Fans) are much rarer because Marvel drove them off. Now the zombies just want the image and the quick fix.
“Thank god for Star Wars” eh Tom?
Ultimately that is what gets me the most bummed. This problem goes beyond Richard Rider, and it sucks.

: Defeatism is the worst thing any Rider fan can
: fall into. That plays right into the hands
: of Brevoort, Alonso, and Loeb. Hate us all
: they want, but they are not getting our
: money. Sooner or later money talks and hate
: walks. NINO gets no money and NINO starves.
: At some point, Brevoort, Alonso, and Loeb
: will all be gone and maybe some leadership
: with functional brains will come along and
: we'll get Rich back. I'm willing to wait.
: He's been gone a long time before. He can
: come back again. Take a longer term
: perspective. That's why I say, "Better
: no Nova than NINO" because NINO will
: ultimately sully the concepts to the point
: that it ruins them. If NINO fails and goes
: away, that's a good thing because somebody
: who remembers when Nova was actually good
: (Wolfman, DnA tenures for example) will
: eventually be in charge and bring Rich back.
: It'll happen a lot quicker if Rich is
: featured in one of the movies.

: Marvel doesn't operate in a vacuum. It runs
: on money just like every other publisher. If
: NINO makes money, NINO will continue. If it
: doesn't make money, it won't. Boycotts work
: by starving the beast of money. My
: prediction is that NINO will be gone in less
: than 12 issues. May or may not bring Rich
: back, but Rich certainly won't be back if
: NINO is at all successful. In either case,
: better no "Nova" than NINO
: continuing to sully the concepts.
:

: I do agree. Buying more Sam = more Sam being
: produced. It's simple supply & demand.
: The problem is that purposefully boycotting
: Nova will probably lead to no Nova
: (including Rich). I want people to buy it if
: they like it, and don't buy if they don't
: like. They shouldn't have to feel obligated
: just because Nova is on the cover. Marvel
: has kept books afloat just because. Moon
: Knight has been relaunched over and over and
: barely makes it 12 issues. But somehow,
: someone wanted to change the entire feel and
: mythos of Nova and Marvel allowed it. They
: should have just created a new character
: with similar powers and left Rich alone.
:
: I'm not buying the current or previous Nova
: book, but I'm not necessarily boycotting any
: book with Sam in it. I'm obviously a huge
: Rich fan, and IF Sam's story was actually
: really good, I'd buy it. But it's clear that
: Marvel wants to go with a different
: direction, and it's one that i'm not into.
:
: It's already been decided at this point.
: Boycotting or not does not matter. Rich
: won't come back until Marvel decides it, not
: the fans.
:

: Wrong as usual. Buying NINO will kill Rich
: Rider permanently. What part of the word
: "replacement" do you not get?
: Those were Brevoort's words to describe
: NINO. You accept the replacement, then the
: original never returns. You reject the
: replacement and make it clear why, you may
: get the original back. Nothing is
: guaranteed except that buying NINO will only
: get you more NINO. Clearly, the "buy
: NINO to get Rich back" wishful thinking
: perpetrated by this site and the NPP has
: been wrong from the start.
:
: --Previous Message--
: I still absolutely believe that the boycott
: will kill Richard Rider instead of bringing
: him back. And you will disagree and hate me
: for it.
:
: But I can agree that this issue itself was a
: fail...
:
:
: --Previous Message--
: "Epic Fail!" As usual. The worse
: the better. It fills me with glee to see
: NINO founder. If we're lucky, NINO will be
: gone in 8 issues or less. Good riddance to
: a bad concept that has sullied the Nova
: legacy for far too long. Keep boycotting,
: Rider fans. Send Marvel a clear message that
: NINO is unacceptable.
:
: --Previous Message--
: I enjoyed it ... but one small issue.
: I believe this is issue #3 your referring to
: not, issue #4.
:
:
:
:

: --Previous Message--
: Nova #4 seemed like filler content.
:
: The story was basically:
:
: - Sam is sad about faux-dad.
: - Sam looks for help.
: - No one can help.
: - Sam is bringing down the mood of the
: Avengers.
: - Someone tries to get them out of the
: house.
: - Sam is still sad.
: - Oh, oh! Generic trouble in the street!
: - Follow trouble back to iconic generic bad
: guy.
: - Setup for a fight next issue, with nothing
: resolved, nothing really advanced, and not
: much content.
:
: Not the best issue...
