I knew him second as the starter at some track meets. In fact, he was the starter for the last race I ever ran and the first race where I ever false started. I was competing in the 400 meter dash at the Red Arrow Conference championship, and I leaned over too much and lost my balance and touched my fingers across the starting line in order to regain my balance. He fired the starting gun, I took off, then he fired it again, which means to return to the starting line. I don't remember the circumstances, but I thought you had to false start twice to be kicked out of the race. In any case, the first time I ever false started was the last race I ever ran, and it was Herb Quade who was the starter. Herb Quade may have also performed some of the duties that my dad used to as Chief Engineer at WHFB from 1977-1985.
