I never understood that hippie's Southern accent. Now that I think about it, he's the only Southern witch or warlock on the show. And there weren't that many in the cosmos who didn't sport British (or Australian!) accents! In fact, where did Samantha get her accent? Mummy and Daddy sounded British... But,then, Endora and Arthur obviously grew up in separate places. Or am I just thinking too hard about this? (This Southern witch just wants to know!) "Witches are good! Witches are dear!"

I always thought that Samantha had a very cultured pattern to her speech that was very much influenced by her mother and father's somewhat British accent. I suppose she'd have a great deal of influences over the years, what with being several hundreds years old.

Interesting points. I always thought that Elizabeth Montgomery made a small effort to show an influence on Sam's speech from Endora and Maurice's accents. That, or in real life she actually did say "raw-ther" for "rather" ("Mother, I'd raw-ther do it myself!"), and "cherry to-maw-toes".
Sam was a world citizen who, for the time, identified herself as American. I think that, in her power to do so, she adopted an accent to suit. And fickle Serena seemed to adopt different accents on a regular basis! "Sterbo... Vectra... Rangay... Zeem. You're about to have a dream. And, in the words of a wise philosopher, it's going to be a BEAUT!"

Good points, all! Yes, and Sam said "Ahnt Hagatha," which pops up in lots of dialects, but sounds more refined to my Ga./North Carolina ears. But I always loved EM's own "gi-yun" (as in "gin rummy") and "whi-yun?" (as in "Sam, I need to see you in the kitchen!!" "Whi-yun?" "NOW!!")."Witches are good! Witches are dear!"
