It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Joan "Joey" York passed away late last night (01/20/12). In the forward to Dick York's autobiography, Joey wrote, "Dick used to say that he was the words and I was the music. I don't have the words that he had; certainly I don't have the words to do justice to the wonderfulness that was Dick York, my husband of forty years and my life before that and after that."

Joan's health had declined over the years, and there had been rumors of her death several years ago when a storage locker filled with memorabilia was sold on eBay, but now it is confirmed.

York's autobiography was named "The Seesaw Girl and Me" in reference to Joey and chronicled the importance of his wife in the Bewitched star's life from the time they were radio voice actors as teenagers through York's rise to fame and his serious health problems and financial decline. The book is a valentine to the love and devotion Joan provided to him when she took those marriage vows "in sickness and in health" and "for richer for poorer." He was lucky to have her by his side, and for that all fans should be thankful to her.

We should also be thankful that she has released her ailing body and her spirit is soaring with her "Dickie" again, yet it is still a sad day for her friends and family. Please think good thoughts for their family during this difficult time.

Yes, this is so very sad. I was very saddened when I read this today. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Thank you, Queen of the Harpies, for your heartfelt and fitting tribute to Joey, and thank you, posters, for sharing your thoughts. Thanks again, also, to all who've sent cards and notes to Joey in the past. You really made her happy.

I've been thinking about Joey and music. Two of her favorite songs are "Annie's Song," sung by John Denver, and "Memory" from the musical Cats, sung by Betty Buckley. Should you ever listen to these, please remember her. Here are the lyrics to another song that I don't believe she knew but that I will associate with her forever (it is "Nightingale," sung by Leonard Cohen, lyrics copied from MetroLyrics.com):

Those are all beautiful songs. I'm glad you were able to be there for her as a friend for all of these years. Thank you for ensuring our cards and messages got to her, and for publishing Dick's book so we could get a glimpse into the person that he was in his final years.

I was thinking about how the first time she contacted me was about a vintage article we had posted and how it was supposedly an interview conducted with her at their home. It was just a little fluff piece about Dick's family with a couple of Bewitched quips thrown in--nothing scandalous, but she wrote to me about the "yellow journalism" back in those days and how she never said any of the quotes or had that reporter to their house. They just threw a few stock photos in a piece that was manufactured and published it. So, I took the article down. It was one of my first lessons in how those vintage articles could not be trusted, and I understood why some of the actors refused to work with certain publications later in life.

That's why the Filmfax article, the Entertainment Tonight interviews, and the book The Seesaw Girl and Me are so important in capturing who they really were in their own words. May they both rest in peace now.

I have been away from the board for awhile and I am very saddened by this news. Joey always stood by her man and stuck with him through good and bad. She is reunited with him. Prayers and thoughts for the family.
