When dryer vent seems risky

I’ve been reading a lot of posts lately about how dryer vents can become a serious fire hazard if not maintained. My dryer is about 10 years old, and while I clean the lint trap every time, I can still see dust building up behind the machine and around the vent cap outside. The airflow seems weaker than it used to be, and sometimes the top of the dryer gets really hot after a cycle. It makes me nervous thinking about how easily lint can catch fire if the system is clogged. Has anyone here taken steps to make their dryer safer and more efficient?
