Mystery rewards can improve a balance when they add a small amount at the right moment and fit naturally into the session. I think they work best when the player can use the reward on familiar games without changing their normal pace. Even a modest surprise can feel helpful if it gives a little more room for extra spins and keeps the session relaxed.
