I was at CP for Robbie's jump with Spanky . They told him 12' . Due to GW missing his ramp. Robbie also had to spend 100 k on fencing due to the people that fell when the wall collapsed. My guess is EK thought the thinner ramps looked out of place with the busses . He only used them at KI and the Kingdome. Anybody that does this stuff is a showoff they just dont have showmanship. Check out a song by Jan & Dean called I Gotta Drive I'm sure it's on youtube . And you'll be told the real reason guy's show off and want to win . GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS !!!!!!! --Previous Message-- : I've been in the business for 32 years and : I've never had a venue talk to me about how : wide they want my landing ramp. : I don't think the X Games FMX are boring, I : think it's cool. It's like the gymnastics : type of competition sort of to me. No, it's : not like a show, but it's still cool. When : Evel was young and went to Vegas and saw : Liberache' - he thought something like : "what if I could be Liberache' on a : motorcycle." Hence his showmanship : began. Now I know he had other influence : and his own personal charisma, I'm just : making the point. : Anyway there is a difference between : competition and charisma in showmanship. : The FMX'ers spend all their time building : their unique skill set to do these : incredible jumps with variations, they arn't : into being "show off's" it's not : their thing, they'd think it's kind of : wacked i get the feeling, lol : : --Previous Message-- : Sometime the width of the ramp is what the : place wants. My understanding was CP told : Robbie he would need at least a 12' ramp. : The problem is this new competition is as : boring as the old jump offs became . The : show was built on CAN HE DO THE IMPOSSIBLE : AND JUMP 17 CARS!!!! ??? Not heres the next : jumper and the next and the next doing it 10 : times apiece . VK was not EK'S ramps . : : --Previous Message-- : Guys Seriously, the sport is progressing as : it : would and should. How cool would any sport : be if records stayed the same for 40 years? : To say that a 30 car jump is less dangerous : than a 15 car jump doesn't make sense. They : may not have Evel's flair, but who does, : really? That's why Evel (the performer) was : so cool and why we loved him. The whole X : Games thing isn't about showmanship but more : for a competition perspective. I think it's : good to have different categories for : landing areas, sure, but it's different : disciplines and should be respected. Nobody : would try a 300 foot jump and land on the : old style landing ramp (Evel's landing ramp : was 7 feet wide for his standard : performances, so they could be loaded in the : trailer, I personally measured them). Even : Evel used huge landing ramps nearing the end : of his career. Look at the landing ramp : used in Viva Knievel, Wembly or Kings : Island. The deal is the length of the jump : and to land safely. Lets learn from our : predecessors failings (Butch Laswell). To : do cool long jumps and land safely is the : goal. It's irresponsible to use inferior : equipment in the stunt business (as in any : other profession), including ridiculously : thin landing areas. : : --Previous Message-- : I'm old school but superman fell off a horse : at "slow" speed and eventually : died of that injury. But ken is right, these : new jumpers are boring with Ramp to ramp or : ramp to dirt jumps. Maddo's on the building : - off the building stunt was super cool. RK : uses a curved ramp, not sure what category : to put him in. : : --Previous Message-- : : : YES any fool could jump ramp to ramp. There : I said it. The secrets out. And to prove it, : look at the jumpers of today, with all the : modern equipment. And even with this : equipment their shows are boring. No : showmanship. No danger. You know that but : you won't admit it. I am in more danger : jumping 15 cars then Maddison is jumping 30 : cars. It's the way things have progressed. I : won't comment on this subject anymore. I'll : let the fans decide what is more dangerous, : today's ramp to dirt so called jumpers or : the wooden ramp to ramp, or ramp to ground : jumpers of the early 70's. : : : : : : : : : |
