Please take it very easy on the garden work. I know that you love it and like me just want to dive in head first and do until you can't but the reason that you can, some anyway, is because you have had it easy during the colder months and recovery. Please start doing warm-up exercises on Silver Sneakers Channel for a few weeks now so you can start off ahead of the game and can do more without hurting yourself. I can't stand the thought of you being sidelined again with a bad injury.
Sheesh! That estimate for gravel seems a bit steep. Do you have run-off ditches, swells or drains on your streets? Maybe it would be cheaper to have a French drain put in to run to that and some fill dirt. After all, you like French stuff so maybe that would be cheaper. Around here and even where my mom lives you can often find crews putting in new water or internet lines or doing road work and they are having to get rid of dirt that won't go back in the hole. They always have to find places to dump it or they have to pay to have it dumped so if you see some of those crews stop and ask if you can have or buy the dirt cheaply. My brother just got a free dump truckload of dirt from his city working at the end of his road. Dumped it as they went by right beside the low spot in his front yard so he didn't even have to wheelbarrow it.
Is it in shade so that it doesn't grow well there or is it just bad soil? If it is shade then some zoysia grass grows well in shade or there are some varieties of grass that we plant in deep shade that I can help you decide on if you want to go that way. There has got to be a cheaper way although everything is so high these days. My goodness we just stopped and got three salads with grilled chicken on them and they were $70. We had to dig to find the 5 little pieces or tomato or carrot in a huge bed of lettuce. It was sad so maybe getting gravel has gone up that much. Scary.
