I used to use sheets and/or pillowcases to make curtains because I couldn't not find material that I liked for certain rooms but could find perfect sheets. I don't know if you have discovered them, but these make what you are doing so easy. They sell them at most Walmarts and Walmart online as well it is just that these were at the top of the search. Just clip them on and slide them onto the curtain rod.

I generally go with blinds because of my allergies, since they are easier to clean weekly but you can do both. Use the blinds and hang curtains later if you find what you like as a decorative statement.
Thank goodness those students have you! My husband was on a similar program when we first got married, and all his counselor did was hand him a letter when he graduated from college, telling him to make copies to attach to his resume and job applications, have a good life, goodbye. He had to find his own job to apply for, and it was hard for someone who was under a doctor's care and would have to miss a lot of work for the first few years.
