I always say if you can live on what one of you makes in retirement and Social Security, then you should be able to make it if you have any savings to cover emergencies and to replace things as you go along. The other person's check/retirement can give you some extra and or savings. Except for buying a house, which we plan to replace when we sell a house, we haven't touched our savings in three years.
