I kinda understand about the pain medications. After getting a bag, I took one dose of the opioid that was prescribed for me at home. It didn't really help the pain at all; it just dulled my brain but made me feel awful. If I had pain after that, I took Tylenol. Do pay attention to the pain; if it gets worse, get him to Emergency, not critical care, Emergency. (Ask me how I know) That surgery does carry some chance of an infection, even though they take every precaution they can. Not something to fear, just be aware that he is not hurting worse.
Everybody is different, and I was expecting to feel better after the six-week point, when it seems that most surgeons feel that it is ok to resume life. I didn't. I was still so exhausted that I could barely eat then. Most days I could only choke down 500-600 calories a day. I lost a lot of weight, quickly. That became part of the problem with healing, too. The ten-week point was the turning point for me, though. Eating got easier, movement got easier, pain got better, and my strength started getting better. Things just started looking up that week, and I could see improvements daily after that.
My mother's hip surgery, it was six months or longer before she quit rubbing it frequently because it was hurting.
Your dad has had a lot going on for several months now. Cancer, broken bone, and 2 surgeries. His body is at a very low point; it will take a lot of building. It will take time, maybe months, but he no longer has a cancer diagnosis hanging over his head. He has hope. Hopefully, your dad will hang in there, and a lot of the pain will ease up in a few weeks, and with the pain leaving, I hope his mood will improve. If his mood improves, I am sure your brother's will.
