Back from the dr… Posted by Cindy on 5/2/2025, 2:51 pm Sadly this will be the last time I see my primary care dr. He is retiring as his diabetes is out of of control and is affecting his vision. He was off for over a month getting his blood sugar levels under control, but the damage to his vision was so bad that it forced him to look at things and he decided if he wanted to travel and enjoy retirement he needed to do it now before his sight got any worse. This was a three month checkup (that turned out to be a 5 month check up since he was out of the office)for me and I was up 5 pounds since January my blood sugar levels were also up and he said he would classify me as pre diabetic. He told me I need to listen to my body, cut back on the carbs and get this weight off! I know he is right. I’ve just got to do this. I need to look at food as fuel for my body and not for comfort and pleasure. He said he wants to have me seen in 3-4 months to get my A1C levels checked - so I’ve got some time to turn this around. Just being accountable and wish it was as easy to do as the dr said.

Food has been my solace since at least age 3 when I first understood that something was wrong with my body/how I looked. I've been sure I would finally do something about my weight after heart surgery, a gangrenous gallbladder, chronic back pain, a broken vertebrae and months of living a life the size of a postage stamp. But, denial and feeding my food addiction come for common sense and self care. Dr. Melisi spent a lot of time talking to me about the procedure and how my weight is going to make it all that more difficult because he will ha e to go thru a large layer of fat to get to my spine. It was the first time I've ever had a good talk about the impact of my weight on my health. I actually think it was his kindness that has motivated me to lose 25 pounds and strengthen my legs before surgery since I won't be ae to bend forward to stand up or get in/out of the car. Bottom line is 'DON'T BE A PAULA.' You don't want diabetes. Take taking care of YOU seriously.

I thought of myself as fat from age 3 on. After the placement of my cardiac Stent, I was sure I would turn this around. After the difficult recoveries from my broken shoulder and,most recently,broken vertebrae and subsequent months of pain.and living a life the size of a postage stamp, I thought I would surely turn this around. No. Dr. Melisi and I had a long talk when he was explaining the surgery. He showed my images and said he was going to have to go very deep to get to my spine because of the fat around my midsection and showed me the kind of instrument he would have to use. It was the first time I've had a good talk about the impact of my weight on my back and recovery without shame. I think his kindness actually prompted my determination to lose 25 pounds and work on strengthening my legs to help me.get up with bending forward as I won't be able to for weeks after surgery (Aetna reached out and said it will take at least 2 weeks for approval or denial). Why am I saying all of this? I guess I don't want you to be a 'Paula'whose denial about the impact of years of obesity. You don't want diabetes so, hang tough!

Ouch Posted by Delta on 5/2/2025, 7:23 pm, in reply to "Back from the dr…" I hate losing doctors that I like and having to find another one. I am in the process of finding two new specialists. I wish you well. Also, ouch on the pre diabetes diagnosis. My husband got his A1C down to normal with diet and exercise for over 25 years until a medication caused pancreatitis that killed his pancreas and made him have to go on insulin. His is one of those that refuses to follow a "diet", knows nothing about nutrition, carbs were his best friend and didn't like exercise. But he managed it. You already have an advantage over him. YOU CAN DO THIS!
