Very very slow progress Posted by Krista on 3/2/2026, 3:15 pm, in reply to "Krista" It's very hard right now. His progress is minimal - can't stand on his own. Took about 4 steps today with physio twice but they told him he has a long road ahead of him. He can only "walk" with 2 physio people so it's going to be some time before he can come home. He is very discouraged, constipated, in pain, incision is bleeding alot today -- he was crying due to all this today and my father doesn't cry. This is really really really hard. We're praying for a miracle and that he will recover from this and be able to come home. But he said this morning "This is now the cancer taking over ..." Hard to hear.

Close to the end of my father's life, I visited him at the facility he was in. His mood was ok. Even talked about 'beating this thing.' He had to go to the hospital for a test so we said goodbye and the ambo people came for him. I went to the bathroom. When I came out, I looked down the hall. My dad had been loaded into the ambulance in his wheelchair and he was sobbing. My gut still clinched when I have this memory. ODAT for all of you.

You need to remind him that he has just had major surgery and what he is feeling is natural for anyone that has come through a surgery like this. Stay strong Krista. It is hard Posted by Delta on 3/2/2026, 5:48 pm, in reply to "Very very slow progress" It sounds very much like my mother at about the same age, the first several weeks of rehab. She ended up doing 12 weeks at rehab, then another 6 weeks or so at my house before she was comfortable walking anywhere. Most of hers was fear of the pain, but she was only taking Tylenol when she had a prescription for stronger pain meds if she needed them, so the fear of pain must have been stronger than the actual pain, but I can understand. At that age, balance is precarious, and the surgery shifts the center of balance, which is also scary, I'm sure. It seems that if he came through this surgery, it ought to mean that he is a better candidate for the other surgery he needs. I hope that someone finds a way to alleviate his fears and depression so that he can heal. The good news is that when Mama got home, she went up the three steps onto her front porch much better than I did. One day, she was in the kitchen making a snack (PT had me let her make her own lunch and snacks as part of her PT) and forgot to use her Rollator to go from the refrigerator to the sink several times. I had seen it from another room and came in and congratulated her. You should have seen the look of surprise, but after that, it seemed that the fear left, and she progressed very quickly after that. Praying that your dad does not have complications and can get past his fear and depression soon.
