One hundred seventy three years ago Pelikan started out as a manufacturer of artist’s paints. On April 28, 1838, the date of the establishment of the firm, the first price list appeared. As early as 1900 the range was enlarged to include chemical requirements for offices such as inked ribbons, copying inks, stamp pads and adhesives.
Eighty years ago the legendary black and green Pelikan fountain pen made it’s appearance and began its triumphal progress through the world. The pelican symbol is taken from the Gunther Wagner family coat of arms. There are many examples of the close association between Pelikan and the world of art.
This collection of historical posters appears on a 1986 Pelikan wall calendar from my pen ephemera collection and bears impressive witness to this tradition. The posters shown in this calendar originate from respective competitions held amongst painters and designers between 1898 and 1930. Many other beautiful posters were illustrated several years ago on a post card assortment however I never scanned them.
