The deal is, you send your actual card, addressed to the object of your desire and proper postage on it, INSIDE of a larger envelope that is addressed to the postmaster of your choice. Then, the Postmaster will postmark it with whatever flavor of PM they use.
It takes a little time and forethought. But it is worth it.
And somewhat related is the matter of ink color. I know this has been discussed on Pentrace before. But I forget what was said. And there may be newbees who haven't seen it. But...what colors are best for different purposes? What do they symbolize?
Case in point, I know that red is indicated for Valentine's Day for Westerners. It's practically mandatory! But in some cultures, it has totally different meanings. I think that somewhere it means that you wish for the death of the recipient?? And other colors...blue, black, green, brown, turquoise, etc...
