Sorry George--the diaphragm is not OK. The resistance is probably the remnants of the old, now inoperable, diaphragm. You need to back out the assembly that includes the spring (why it goes back and forth) and the diaphragm. That is screwed tightly into the inside of the barrel, and I don't know any way to do that without a special tool (try Pentooling for one) that screws into the back where the blind cap usually is, tightens, and then unscrews counter-clockwise. Use a bit of heat judiciously if needed. Once that assembly is out, you need to clean out the remains of the diaphragm, worry the little ball out of its hole at the back, and add a new diaphragm.
