Pen size and price

I am interested to hear peoples' views on why larger models of makers' pens usually cost so much more than standard sizes. I am principally thinking here about vintage pens such as Conway Stewarts, Onotos and vintage Parkers when they were initially sold. One would imagine that the extra cost of material would not be sufficient to account for this. Even today the cost differential based largely on size is highly noticeable in vintage prices.
