I believe the drilled double check mark was done at the time of Eversharp declaring bankruptcy in 1938-39. Needing cash, Eversharp had a "fire sale" on all of it's existing inventory but did not want returns to deal with, thus the hole indicating no warranty. At least that is my understanding.
