If it was his wife, than princess Benedikte is free to leave the tiara to anyone she likes. With three children and currently 4 grandchildren she can decide herself who she wants to leave to tiara to.
If Richard only gave the use of the tiara to Benedikte but left the piece so either his son or one of his daughters Benedikte will have no say in who ends up with it.
So question marks all around. But Carina has a tiara that seems to have been made or acquired for her. Her two sisters-in-law don't have a tiara that belongs to them. Their mother has three and loans them a tiara whenever one is needed. For their first wedding both were loaned the Khedive diamond scroll tiara now with Queen Anne-Marie.
We don't know what will happen to the Berleburg inheritance. Will it all go to a junior branch of the family or will Prince Gustav have a child to leave all to (possibly with Carina considering her age it's unlikely but not impossible and the couple could have used modern medical techniques to ensure the could have offspring later in life). He could also adopt one of his sisters' children as his heir or heiress (others have done so). In that case the headship of the House might go to another branch but the possessions would remain within the family.
I suppose the tiara will go later to Princess Carina and after her ????
>>But regarding the Berleburg tiara worn by Princess Benedicte.
Her, been a dowager, would one not expect the tiara to be at the disposal for the wife of the current head of the House of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, Princess Carina?<<
I don't think this is the tradition for this tiara. The tiara was given to Prince Richard's grandmother, Madeleine, by her husband, Fürst Richard Hermann Gustav, who died in 1925. It was hers until her death in 1976 when she willed it to Prince Richard. As far as I know, it was never worn by Prince Richard's mother and Princess Benedikte only started wearing it after 1976.
Queen Margrethe is wearing her Pearl Poiré Tiara and Khedive of Egypt Parure (taking off one of the earrings and putting it in her hand), Crown Princess Mary is in the Danish Ruby Parure while Princess Benedikte is wearing the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara for tonight’s New Year’s Banquet at Christian VII’s Palace in Amalienborg !
