In Denmark, the accession of a new monarch is quite a low-key affair: no coronation, no swearing-in in front of the Parliament... The programme announced for January 14th includes:
- a session of the State Council (a cabinet meeting in presence of the Sovereign and of the heir to the throne) in Christiansborg Palace, during which Queen Margrethe II will sign her abdication document, automatically making her son the new King Frederik X;
- it will be immediately followed by the proclamation of the new King by the Prime minister from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace;
- later in the afternoon, the Royal standard will be removed from Amalienborg's Christian IX's Palace (the residence of Queen Margrethe II, where she will keeps living) and moved to Frederik VIII's Palace (Crown Prince Frederik's residence, who will keep living there as King Frederik X)...
... and that's all!
So we shoud certainly not expect any tiara. If we happen to see the new King with a uniform, and the new Queen with an floor-length dress and a brooch, we might consider ourselves happy...
Regarding the decorations, King Frederik X will be entitled to wear the order collars and the (oversized) large diamond-studded decorations which are part of the Danish regalia, and which were occasionally worn by his predecessors, but only for the grandest occasions, instead of the usual breast stars. I do not expect these items to be worn next January 14th.
- Chain of the Order of the Elephant with Insignia, gold with enamel and table-cut stones. The Chain was possibly made in Copenhagen by the goldsmith Jean Henri de Moor after 1693; the elephant possibly by Paul Kurtz, 1671:
- Breast star of the Order of the Elephant, brilliants and pearls on gold and enamel. Possibly made c. 1770 by J.F. Fistaine:
- Chain of the Order of Dannebrog with Insignia, gold with enamel and table-cut stones. The Order was established by Christian V in 1671. The Insignia was possibly made by Paul Kurtz in the same year:
- Breast star of the Order of Dannebrog, gold with brilliants and rubies. Made after amendments to the statutes of the Order in 1808, probably for Frederik VI:
I think the new King will wear exactly what he wore at Christiansborg on 1&3 January. The new Queen will also wear something similar to what she wore to Christiansborg, I think. There is no reason for the Queen to wear black. No one has died 😊
