I think this diamond collar would be appropriate for a young woman - both because of the references to love in the design and because this high dog-collar shape is appropriate for the slim and firm neck of a young lady rather than the sagging flesh of the neck of an older lady...

Therefore, it would have suited the young QEQM, when she was Duchess of York. But the very classical, ornate design of this collar requires, IMHO, other jewels of matching style. For instance, it would have suited the Strathmore Floral Tiara, but not the jewels of Art Deco style which were fashionable at the time.

Fashion precisely is the most plausible reason why QEQM never wore this diamond collar, even when she was the young Duchess of York: at the time (1920s/1930s), fashion favoured loose forms (long loose dresses, long sautoirs...) as a reaction against the more constricting Victorian/Edwardian fashion of pre-WW1. In other words, this diamond collar was in itself very beautiful, but was out of fashion.

I think that the Duchess of Cambridge could wear this diamond collar with great success - provided she has an appropriate hairdo, i.e. with her hair up, as a chignon.
