Thank you Mike. What an interesting input to this discussion. It certainly gives me something to ponder, as I personally hadn't considered the possible depth of the emerald. Just at present I am trying to envisage how a shallow, translucent, green stone placed against a pale colour would influence the colour. In this photo the stone seems dark and opaque to me. Yet, on a very similar shade the central stone in the brooch is clearly an emerald colour. Re QEQM and amethysts. I know that there aren't photos of HM wearing a full amethyst parure, but there are photos of HM wearing the Kent amethyst brooch and we know that she often wore various shades of lilac/mauve/purple throughout her life, including for evening wear, so I suspect she would not have been adverse to the colour of amethysts. Whether QEQM considered purple and amethysts as a sign of half mourning is an interesting question. If I have understood a post Franck did recently, it is possible that he has evidence that QEQM didn't sell Queen Mary's amethyst's parure. One of the great things about this board is that people freely share opinions and knowledge and can debate ideas. I find that the most invaluable aspect of the board. Again, many thanks to Mike for his ideas. I will certainly be pondering them. It is fascinating to read and explore the ideas put forward by others; they enrich my understanding enormously.
