This was posted in the wrong thread and I have now copied it to a thread above on the jewels of Princess Mary, the Princes Royal, the Countess of Harewood.
My apologies for the mix-up.
Recently I decided to see what wedding presents were given to Princess Mary by either the Australian government or the governments of the various States. Nothing of significance was given, but in my search on Australian newspapers I came across comments indicating that Princess Mary had personally selected her present from the British Navy and other various groups.
Some of the press comments about the presents from various groups are not 100% clear; however, in both the British and the Australian press it is very clear that Princess Mary selected her gift from the British Navy.
Below is an excerpt from the Times 21 February 1922. It is typical of those which highlight that the Princess, herself, selected the gift.
The Princess' choice was the emerald negligee which was later used as part of the emerald necklace which Arthur posted about and which Laura's research showed was formed from two of the Princess' wedding presents.
For those who might be interested in details of the other emerald brooch which later formed part of the Princess' emerald necklace and which was a gift from the county of Yorkshire, below is a description of the original brooch. The measurements in inches might help some understand the size of the emeralds more than the carat weights. Daily Telegraph 21 February 1922
Several other presents of jewels appear to have been selected by the Princess but the references to those are not as clear as to the British Navy gift, except for the gifts made by the Marys of the Empire and the Diplomatic Corps -sadly for jewel lovers the latter was not a gift of jewels.
