4 new tiaras in 23 years

Between 1999 (wedding of the Duke of Brabant and Lady Mathilde) and 2022 (party in Oslo) 4 new tiaras are added to the collection tiaras of the Belgian royal family.

Laurel wreath
Diamond tiara
Pearl & Diamond tiara
Vestey Tiara

Do we have a winner in this competition?

I would say The Duchess of Brabant’s diamond tiara is obviously the grandest out of all of them, although her mother’s laurel leaf tiara scores excellent points by the flexibility of being worn as both tiara and necklace. If Elisabeth’s tiara can do this trick at all, it would be an extremely extravagant necklace out of place except for the most formal occasions.

I hope the upper-part can be removed, creating a kind of bandeau! I hope the tiara can be worn as necklace/brooches/…

But both Mary and Marie were given the use of old family tiara's, that did not happen in Belgium.

So the Danes win the contest in my view.

Of the new Belgian tiara's my favourite is Mathilde's laurel tiara. I like the design and overall the design is much better than Claire's small wedding taira or the pearl tiara she later has worn a few times. I'd have to see more of the new tiara of Elisabeth to put it over her mother's.

Princess Claire’s wedding tiara is very delicate but so small. What were Albert and Paola thinking when they bought it? Although they don’t seem like extravagant people, at least Philippe and Mathilda can buy impressive jewels when they have to.

Not to forget Crown Princess Mary's antique tiara. Maybe not the most dazzling of pieces, but it is a good addition to the collection of the Danish Royal Family and with time it can be handed down to one of her daughters or daughter-in-law leaving the more historical pieces she will have access to within the main line.

I do love the flexibility of the Laurel Wreath tiara of Queen Mathilde, and it is a rather appealing piece both as a tiara and as a necklace. But I must say that I would put the Duchess of Brabant's tiara up on first place even though we have only seen it worn by her once. Who knows, it might also be a flexible piece and it would be interesting to see it worn as a necklace too.

In addition to the size of the tiara it is also the fact that it was a gift from her parents, so a piece bought in by the Belgian Royal Family as opposed to the Laurel Wreath tiara which was a gift coming from outside the family.

And I absolutely love the fact that the Duchess now has a tiara that will become her signature piece and that she won't have to rely on loans from her mother or grandmother to look the part!
