I know it looked worryingly uncomfortable! I bet she was happy to take it off.... Previous Message In 1953 Queen Elizabeth had the Imperial State Crown modified: the arches lowered because the version worn by her father in 1937 was too tall. Queen Camilla wore Queen Mary's crown from 1911 with some of the arches taken off to make it lighter but it seems the jeweller was not requested to lower the arches to match the Imperial State Crown. To me Camilla's Crown looked just as tall or even taller than the Imperial State Crown. Any thoughts?

oh yes I agree, it looked out of proportion to The Kings crown. I wonder why he didn’t have the arches of the Imperial Crown restored to his his grandfather George VI had them. I agree Mary's crown looked too tall and even worse the dark purple of the cap of maintenance and the size of it made the Queen's crown look too big and uncomfortable. I was trying to figure out what it reminded me of, and finally it occurred to me that I was reminded of the coronation photo of The Empress Zita as Queen of Hungary. Her diamond crown also looked so large on her head. Arches

In many (former) kingdoms there are crowns with 8 arches. The Imperial State Crown, created in 1937 when George VI was still Emperor of India, has 4 arches. I suspect Queen Mary's crown was modified to match the 4 arches of St Edwards Crown and the Imperial State Crown plus it reduced the weight somewhat. Still, I think the proportions of this crown are not very flattering. A further adjustment is needed. Previous Message I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the extra arches were removed because 8 arches are for an imperial crown (ie: for an empire), and the UK is not an empire anymore. But I'm sure making it lighter was a welcome bonus.
