After finding this amazing Mellerio Brooch by DutchJewels some time ago all we could guess if this brooch is still in the Royal collection. But then at the wedding of her grandson Prince Maurits, may 1998, it was spotted on Princess Juliana. We all thought it was its first appearance, but I found a picture of Queen Juliana wearing the same Lilly piece in september 1960 at the opening of Parliament, the Staten Generaal. I don't know what happened with the bottom piece of the brooch.
Good find! Yes it seems Juliana was the one who gave it a second life. The original brooch with the long stem is of course not very wearable these days, if it ever was... I was once told the orriginal was still complete but we have not seen it nor the flower head on either Beatrix or Maxima. Perhaps Maxima will have a closer look in the vaults one of these days and surprise us with a stunning 'new' brooch or pendant.
