Very impressive, indeed... quite a whopper brooch!
The brooch setting looks antique, though the "chain" looks possibly more modern. I wonder if it is a new piece in the royal collection, or another historical heirloom seeing daylight for the first time in ages...

Trond says that it's from Queen Alexandra's collection, so I bet there's a Russian connection, too.

I thought it had a faberge feel to it, not saying it is faberge because it wasn’t mentioned in the royal catalogue but it does have that feel in the way such large semiprecious stones are treated. Like the Nobel snowflake jewellery.
Is it aquamarines or blue topaz? It's a very bright blue but that might be because of the coat it's worn with. Normally aquamarines are a little paler or have a hint of green in the blue.

This information is certainly reliable, as Trond Noren Isaksen mentions that he was specially granted by King Charles III an access to Queen Alexandra's photographic jewellery inventory, stored in Windsor castle in the Royal Archives. With that (presumably huge) mine of information, he made an article in the March edition of Majesty magazine.

Stunning stones I have to say. But, having said that, I am not a big fan of the brooch in its entirety. That only comes down to my own taste of course. I do like the elements separately, but maybe it is because together they make such a huge brooch I find it maybe a bit "too much" (if that is actually possible to say when it comes to Royal jewels!)

Have a look at Ursula's blog entry on royal-magazin.de
Ursula believes it was orginally a cloak clasp. The photo on her site shows it clearly. Under "Queen Alexandra's Aquamarine Coat Clasp"
