Maxima was only the fiancee of the Prince of Orange when she attended the incoming visit of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia and wore the aquamarines with the order of Isabel the Catholic. Tonight Queen Maxima is wearing the Stuart tiara in the full setting. Queen Letizia opted for Queen Maria Christina's diamond and pearl loop tiara. Princess Beatrix is in the diamond rose cut bandeau and the Princess of Orange in the Peacock parure (tiara and necklace). Princess Margriet opted for the bandeau a la Grecque. Pity Maxima did not opt for a necklace. The house diamond necklace might have been too much but the large diamond Rivière would have completed the fabulous look. Queen Letizia rarely wears necklaces with tiara's that may be why Maxima decided not to wear one. The three princesses all wear a necklace with their tiara. Amalia the one from the Peacock parure, Beatrix and Margriet both opted for a diamond riviere. As far as i can tell the larger version of Queen Wilhelmina's birthday present from her father is not one of them. Honestly I don't think Maxima takes jewel preferences of her guests into serious consideration. The dress was of course made to go with the colour of the Stuart diamond. I can't emphasise this enough but that diamond is just stunning. People are always drooling over the Cullinans in the UK but this piece is way more spectacular because of its history and the fact that it has such a unique blue-greenish colour. Can we please refer to the tiara as the House Diamond Tiara? The Stuart can be mounted on but it does not define the tiara which is set full of old house diamonds and can be worn in many different settings. Wilhelmina was the first to name the hart / drop shaped diamond the ' Stuart' but to my knowledge the tiara created in 1897 never went by that name until in recent years it was given that name by some royal jewel watchers. I agree John R, that beautiful ever-so-slightly tinted stone is incredible, I hope we get to see it as a pendant or brooch if that’s even possible. How fitting that the queen consort of several Caribbean nations has a sparkling jewel the color of the gentle waters that wash the Antilles. I love that it goes back to Mary II, because I don’t think there are many Stuart pieces in circulation among even the Windsor collection, coronation regalia aside. Good suggestion! The Stuart can actually be worn separately. Throughout history it has been a detachable and versatile item. It was worn set in necklaces, on an agraffe (hook) as a pendant or worn as a corsage. Queen Juliana has worn it as a corsage at least once in the 1950's. It would look stunning worn as a pendant on one of the large diamond rivières. Steltman: get to work! As a matter of fact there are several other diamonds dating back to Mary II. For instance the two triangle cut diamonds in the bow brooch Maxima was wearing are also centuries old. It is said there are a few other stones, let alone pearls in the collection that are even older. The O-N bought diamonds very early on: Frederik Hendrik bought the Beau Sancy diamond once owned By Maria de Medici for his royal daughter in law Mary Henrietta Stuart (who also happened to be a grand-daughter of Maria de Medici). This diamond ended up with the Prussian royal family after the death of Willem III in 1702. Indeed she truly has a regal posture and towering presence and transforms immediately into a very convincing royal heiress. Her younger sister Ariane also has that quality I suspect but I have not seen it yet on the middle sibling who seems to have been blessed with a healthy dose of latin charm and frivolity. When looking at the group photo - you see how many toughts goes into planning what the Queens should wear to these state visits. If you look at the color of the dress of the Queen of Spain and her sash - then they perfectly match the colors in the sash of her husband's Dutch order. Same goes for the Queen of the Netherlands. Her dress also perfectly matches her husband's sash of his Spanish order

Yes it does look like that sometimes but it also depends on the tiara. Pieces that have a prominent central (raised) element are more prone to it and if the tiara has a tendency to slide then you end up with a very crooked picture. Maxima had such an incident with the Ornate Pearl tiara a few years back. Previous Message Both Queens wear their hair side-parted. To me, that makes the tiaras look off-centre. I feel tiaras are better worn with a center-part hairdo.

I suspect Princess Alexia will be the fun-loving rebel, a la Princess Margaret. I would love to see her in an equal marriage with a gorgeous prince, oh so sad those days are over! She has worn necklaces several times when Princess of Asturias but now she seem to have an allergy against them. Previous Message I have been thinking about Queen Letizia not wearing a necklace. And does not seem to do so in generel. Can the reason be that she is not that tall a person and the a necklace would visually make her even shorter? Without one it makes her neck seem longer? the Stuart diamond was known as the Holland diamond in the 19th century. I tend to call the tiara the House Diamond tiara in most of it's settings and only use the Stuart Tiara when it actually contains the Stuart diamond. I think it would be nice if one of the middle stones was turned into a brooch that could have the Stuart diamond as a pendant. If two other diamond in size between the middle and smaller diamonds could be placed on the tiara you'd have a more balanced tiara with a stunning brooch, necklace and stomacher.
