Queen Mary of Denmark is wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara with the Earrings and Diamond Rivière of the Antique Diamond Parure at her first State Banquet at Christiansborg Palace this evening.

Princess Benedikte wore the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara with Queen Victoria of Sweden’s Diamond Stars.

After having seen this I suspect that we will have to get used to an era of boredom jewelwise when it comes to the Queens choises.

1. The tiara demands a higher hairdo or else the pearls will just fall to the sides as one can see on the photos. The tiara will not be displayed properly otherwise. Queen Mary does not usually have high hairdos.

2. The dress leaves her with no other choise than to use the diamond necklace which is a bit sad it being her first incoming statevisit. Maybe a dress with space for a more prominent set of jewels would have been in place.

I think the Queen looked splendid in these jewels. Always pristine. IMHO the Pearl Poiré tiara suits her much better than the Ruby tiara and I like that she mixes and matches. Yes she wears her tiaras tilted back a little (too much) but she looks marvellous and perhaps its just more comfortable for her. At least she's wearing it! As for the Khedive of Egypt pearl necklace, which is not part of a parure with the tiara, I didn't miss it. My only hope is that Queen Mary has now given up wearing her small wedding tiara and the rather cheap looking Edwardian tiara she acquired in recent years. Nice for her daughters, not suitable for a Queen Consort.
