Queen Sonja is wearing Norwegian Emerald Parure Crown Princess Mette-Marit is in the Diamond Daisy Bandeau and Princess Astrid is wearing her Vasa Tiara at tonight’s State Banquet for the Finnish President at the Royal Palace of Oslo.

In other words no big surprises - at all. I really hope that once Princess Ingrid Alexandra starts to attend these events she will be more inventive than her mother with her jewels. Don't get me wrong, the Daisy bandeau is a lovely dainty piece but it is now time to see something different. Seriously. It is no fun when you are not left wondering beforehand as to what will be worn. If she is so afraid of bigger pieces maybe the Queen could at least have lent her Queen Alexandra's Circlet, just so that there would be some variation. Am I being to harsh? Mette-Marit has already worn queen Maud Vifte tiara and queen Maud pearl tiara (the one which has been stolen with the swedish tourmaline parure) and the amethysts of course but she seems to prefer her wedding bandeau. No, no to harsh. It is business as usual. They need to give us some unexpected glamour once in a while or else they become obsolete. That goes for all royals. It is not only the Crown Princess also the Queen who seems to use only the emeralds or the pearl tiara with matching Jewels and somtimes the big diamond tiara. But she hasn't worn the star Wars tiara and the Malteser bandeau for several years by now and i wonder what is stopping her to use the big diamond tiara from Queen Maud who is back in the vaults and is waiting to be worn again Previous Message In other words no big surprises - at all. I have a sense that Mette Marit is quite a modest person who won't go all out even when she has access to the grander pieces. She might even prefer to give her daughter the limelight. I don't see her wearing the huge Emerald Tiara except for a portrait but I would love to be proven wrong. Any way I think Queen Josefina's diamond tiara will suit her much better than the Emerald piece. Hopefully Princess Astrid will hand down some of her grandest jewels to the main line just as her sister has done. I guess that the Ferner daughters and daughters-in-law will very rarely need Princess Astrid's jewels after her demise. They will never be invited to State occasions (State visits, annual Parliament gala banquet...), only to family occasions (jubilees, weddings, "big" solemnized birthdays), which do not occur very often. Rationally, it would be better to give back all the historic jewelry to the main branch of the Royal family, with the provision to lend the Ferners some pieces when occasionally needed. Nevertheless, I feel that Princess Astrid has reached a sensible, fair and honourable compromise between the historical/patrimonial interest of the Royal family (to whom the bigger jewels will eventually revert) and the affective and financial interests of her own descendants (who will inherit the minor jewels, either for use or for sale). If these jewels are eventually sold or auctioned off, maybe King Harald V (or later King Haakon VIII) will have the opportunity (and the financial capacity) to buy them back too. Surely, Crown Princess Mette-Marrit is not the "jewel addict" type. She wears jewels when needed, but rather modest ones, and usually just the required minimum. She does not look very interested in "playing" with her jewel collection, contrary to Queen Maxima of the Netherlands or Queen Mary of Denmark, and even less in buying new pieces to expand her collection. To be fair with her, she has quite few pieces at her disposal. I agree that a more frequent use of Queen Alexandra's circlet could be made, as it is a lovely piece (with or without the Maltese crosses), neither too small nor too big - perfect for a lady of Crown Princess Mette-Marrit's age. But as it is a full circlet, I don't know if it fits Mette-Marrit's head size. Queen Maud's pearl and diamond tiara (in its grander version) would also fit the Crown Princess. I hope that, when she becomes Queen of Norway, Mette-Marrit will wear coloured jewels. As her hair is now very pale fair, and will certainly eventually turn to white with the age, she should wear coloured jewels, as "white" jewels (pearls and/or diamonds) will "blend" into her hair (as it was the case with Queen Elizabeth II in her late years). The Napoleonic emerald parure would look great on her, and not just for its regal outlook and its historical importance. The same for Queen Alexandra's turquoise and diamond parure (now with Princess Astrid). I was just thinking though, maybe the ruby aigrette should go back to the main line since it was one of Queen Maud’s pieces. Actually as she wears her hair often loose or in flat updoos i think tiaras like the 2 bigger diamond tiaras or the opearl and doamond tiaras will not disappear in her hair. I seem to recall Martha Louise making a single outing wearing the Maltese circlet without the crosses, and it not looking like it fit correctly on her head. So I think it’s always something to consider, and possibly remediate when possible. Maud's aigrette in both it's versions (all diamonds and diamond and rubies) would make a very nice small tiara with the earrings. That would provide Princess Astrid's descendants with a lovely set of jewels to wear on their wedding day or for grand occasions if they are to be invited to them. Princess Märtha-Louise wore Queen Alexandra's diamond coronet (without the Maltese crosses) twice, in 1992 and 1993, respectively for the Danish and Swedish State visits to Norway. Judging from the pictures below, it looked well-positioned and lovely on the Princess' head. I agree. The circlet didn't seem to pose any problems for the Princess when it came to the placement and it looked lovely on her. The fact it being a circlet could actually work in the Crown Princess' favour should she ever chose to wear it, as it won't be that easy to tilt it so much backwards making it look like a hair band instead of a sparkling tiara. Princess Märtha Louise could also have worn the circlet at the State Visit from Iceland in 1993, though I have not found any photos where it is possible to confirm this 100%. The reason for thinking that she might have done is that she did wear the "Maltese" crosses on that occasion. They could have been fixed on a simple frame though and not the circlet itself of course. I have also seen once a pic of Princess Märtha Louise wearing the Maltese tiara with the crosses. But don't remember where and not which occasion it was Previous Message I agree. The circlet didn't seem to pose any problems for the Princess when it came to the placement and it looked lovely on her. The fact it being a circlet could actually work in the Crown Princess' favour should she ever chose to wear it, as it won't be that easy to tilt it so much backwards making it look like a hair band instead of a sparkling tiara. Princess Märtha Louise could also have worn the circlet at the State Visit from Iceland in 1993, though I have not found any photos where it is possible to confirm this 100%. The reason for thinking that she might have done is that she did wear the "Maltese" crosses on that occasion. They could have been fixed on a simple frame though and not the circlet itself of course. Previous Message Princess Märtha-Louise wore Queen Alexandra's diamond coronet (without the Maltese crosses) twice, in 1992 and 1993, respectively for the Danish and Swedish State visits to Norway. You’re right, I stand corrected. For some reason I had this memory of it looking so large and her having to wear it tilted far back. But it does actually look fine on her!
