While looking for something else recently, I stumbled upon this photo of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, at what appears to be a banquet in the 1930s.
While HRH's sapphire earrings and other jewels are well-known, the Princess appears to be wearing an usual tiara that looks like costume jewellery. Does anyone know what the event might be and if this is indeed some sort of paste hair ornament? If it is costume, one has to wonder why!
That's interesting Brock. I've never seen the pic or the tiara. Can you be sure it is Alice Athlone? I keep thinking of Princess Patricia of Connaught, Lady Patricia Ramsay

Definitely Alice of Athlone, you can find numerous pictures of her where she bears the same earrings.

The princess Alice Countess of Athlone, at a charity ball in 1931 The Deptford Fund Ball...
I have the picture from the ball but it's not clear as yours.
When Princess Alice Countess of Athlone and the Earl of Athlone attended their first ball since fheir return from South Africa, they found had been arranged resemble as far as possible a ball in a private house. It was the Deptford Fund ball at the Dorchester, London, and Susan Duchess of Somerset had decided to do away with the usual cabaret and side-shows. Instead, as many guests as possible were introduced I to one another, and supper was served tables bordering the dance floor. As pretty compliment the programmes were in the colours the Earl of Athlone's regiment, the 7th Queen's Own Hussars —dark blue and sunshine yellow. Lady May's Necklace. In some ways the ball was the nature of welcome home, for Princess Alice president of the Deptford Hospital, in aid which was held On her arrival she was presented with a bouquet by the only child present—Miss Felicity Tankerville Chamberlaine. Princess Alice and Lady May Cambrjdge, her daughter, both enthusiastic dancers. Lady May Cambridge was wearing a striking necklace of jade held together by strings of pearls. nothing about the jewels of Princess Alice regards Ursula
It looks like it has four parts. The two sides with the higher VVV ends, in the middle at the top the lower vvvv shapes and in front of that something more bulky possibly of fabric.
