I recall an interview when Queen Margrethe was asked about historical jewels being adapted. It was around the time the then CP Mary adapted the tiara of the Ruby Parure. The Queen recalled that Queen Ingrid had adapted the same tiara after she received it as Crown Princess from Queen Alexandrine. Her viewpoint was that if a tiara is either too big or too small, or otherwise ill-fitting, it is unlikely to be worn and will sit in a box. I'm sure she approves of the innovative ways Queen Mary is adapting some of these jewels so that they will be worn without ruining their historical integrity.

I think you are right, Maria Olivia Also, the choise of using a bracelet as a tiara might be solution for someone who does not have many tiaras to chose among.

3 kg = 6.6 pounds = 2500+ carats.
I wonder if something has been lost in translation, or if a typo has become fact. In one article I found they say the matching earrings have diamonds that are 30 carats each. One carat = 200 mg

To me the Braganza tiara is the most magnificent of all the tiaras worn by present day royal ladies. It is absolutely stunning. Lovely to see HM wearing it again, I am sure it is not an easy piece to wear.
For the history, the group picture, with no less than 9 reigning or formerly reigning Kings/Queens/Grand-dukes, 2 presidents (with their respective spouse), 7 Queens/Grand-duchesses consort, 4 heads of former sovereign families (with their respective wife/partner), 4 Crown princes or princesses...
(picture credit: Linda Broström/The Royal Court of Sweden)
1st row, from left to right : Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Sofia of Spain, Queen Margrethe II of denmark, Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark, Queen Silvia and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Sonja and King Harald V ofNorway, Queen Mathilde and King Philippe of the Belgians, Queen Suthida and King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) of Thailand.
2nd row, from left to right : Duke Franz of Bavaria, Björn Skúlason and his wife Halla Tómasdóttir, President of Iceland, Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, and his wife Suzanne Innes-Stubb, Tord Magnuson and his wife Princess Christina of Sweden, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and her daughter Princess Estelle of Sweden, Prince Daniel of Sweden, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, dowager Princess of Sayn-Wittgentstein-Berleburg, Grand-Duke Guillaume V and Grand-Duchess Stéphanie of Luxembourg, Grand-Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Princesse Margareta of Romania, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, and her husband Prince Radu, Princess Katherine and her husband Prince Alexander of Serbia.
3rd row, from left to right : Thomas Greinwald (Duke Franz of Bavaria's partner), Duke Hubertus of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his wife Duchess Kelly, Prince Wenzel of Liechtenstein and his mother Crown Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein, Christopher O’Neill and his wife Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Prince Carl Philip and Princesse Sofia of Sweden, Prince Leopold of Bavaria and his wife Princess Ursula, Crown Prince Filip of Serbia and his wife Crown Princess Danica.
I just regret that, except Princess Estelle, King Carl XVI Gustaf's grandchildren were not on the picture. They could have been seated on the front row (directly on the carpet, or on low stools), which would have added a lovely touch of youth...
I notice that Princess Margaretha of Sweden, eldest sister of the King, was not here. She is 91 now, but is her health condition too frail now?

Wonderful! I'm counting 19 tiaras, just fabulous! Crown Princess Katherine of Serbia was the only royal lady who chose not to wear a tiara. She owns a small diamond scroll tiara she wore in Sweden at CP Victoria's wedding in 2010.
Im slightly shocked by the seating arrangements. Frederik and Mary get precedence over Philip and Mathilde and the Thai royal couple both of them being longer reigning sovereigns. Like Frederik Philip is the grandson of a Swedish princess. It's a breach of protocol and not one I can understand or subscribe to.

And Beatrix, having been a reigning queen, should have been seated next to Queen Margrethe. Queen Sofia was a queen consort.

Looking at the main table seating plan I see that the King of the Belgians is actually sitting immediately to the right of Queen Silvia, so that is quite a prominent position (sitting next to the hostess). It is only natural that King Harald is sitting to her left, him being the longest reigning King (apart from King Carl Gustaf himself of course) present. And since King Philippe is escorting the Queen of Thailand she is seating next to him.
I guess one could have put Queen Mathilde together with the King of Thailand (who himself was assigned a prominent seat to the left of the Swedish King) but that would perhaps resulted in Queen Mary being escorted by her husband (as he would be the only reigninig King "free" then) and thus she would be seated next to him (i.e. Queen Mary and Queen Mathilde swappinig places). That would not be very correct either.
And perhaps Beatrix was places further down as she has now "demoted" herself to Princess rather than Queen (although, yes, she is a former reigning Queen - but she has formally reverted back to her style of HRH and Princess - not HM and Queen).
Just my thoughts of course as it would be impossible to know for sure unless we hear it from someone who actually worked with putting the seating plan together.

They could simply have matched Queen Mary with the Grand duke of Luxembourg and her husband with the Grand duchess. As for Beatrix being moved down yes I agree it's down to the silly habit introduced by Queen Wilhelmina of styling a former monarch as HRH princess. I hope the current monarch and his wife will style themselves as TM King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima once he abdicates.

Re: Seating - Titles of former Monarchs

Let's see if WA will change the tradition but he's likely to also revert back to the title HRH Prince of the Netherlands if/when he abdicates. Not sure what would happen when WA dies while being King. I have a feeling Maxima would not mind being titled Queen-mother next to her daughter The Queen. She likes the limelight a bit too much to step back behind her daughter as a mere Princess but I could be totally wrong of course. Anyway I actually like the clarity: there can only be one Monarch at a time. It's the title that comes with this particular function. When you abdicate you also relinquish the title that comes with the function unless in a principality or Grand Duchy of course there's no different title for the monarch. The formal change of titles also allows for a clean break for the former monarch to step back in a way that suits the person. In other monarchies they never had to deal with this situation before and thought it best to solve it / or not deal with it (Spain, Belgium, Denmark) by allowing the former monarch to keep the title but it actually does not make sense. But in a number of countries former Heads of State also remain ' President' for life...or at least are addressed as such.

I was also actually wondering what would happen if King Willem-Alexander would die while still on the throne. Of course in the case a King dies on the throne there is a presendence with Willem III for instance. His wife continued to be styled Queen, though of course that was more appropriate back than since she had to act as regent for her daughter.
Personally I think that the way the Spanish, Belgian and now the Danish court has handled this is the "better" way. Once a King, always a King. I do see that perhaps it would make things "clearer", but I cannot see that there has been a problem with having two different people in Belgium for instance styled King. Everybody knows (or should now) who the King is and who King Albert is.
And the Dutch way is a bit more "complicated" actually. Because - take the case of King Carl XVI Gustaf's bithday for instance - how to do treat and where do you place a person who used to be the Sovereign of a country but has now reverted back to the style and title of a "mere" Princess. And that style and title is also only for a period. From what I understand once dead the former Sovereign once more "recover" their title and style as Queen / King. Now, that is making it actually more confusing to people in my opinion.
But no matter how she is now styled or titled I was very happy to see Beatrix still representing her country when called upon and wearing sparkling pieces from the vast Dutch collection And not just the jewels, but also the Collar of the Order of the Seraphim.
By the way; it's about time King Philippe and Mathilde pay a State Visit to Sweden. It was in a way odd to see Queen Mathilde only wearing the Order of the Polar Star at this event.

I do not think in the Netherlands there's an official distinction between HM The King versus HM KIng X. The law that regulates membership of the royal house from 2002 is clear: when the King (m/v) abdicates he/she will revert back to the title Prince(ss) of the Netherlands. Its not a personal choice anymore. Maxima has been created a Princess of the Netherlands in her own right and has officially kept the title. She only carries the courtsey title of Queen of the Netherlands. So she will also revert back to Princess of the Netherlands if WA dies because there's nothing in the new law that would allow her to keep the courtesy title of her deceased husband. King Willem I was known as HRH King Willem I, Count of Nassau. Willem II and Willem III passed away. In both cases their wives remained HM Queen. They kept their courtsey title. Wilhelmina started the anomality because she reasoned (correctly at the time) that an abdicated King is constitutionally dead. She had a point back then and took it literally: she acted almost as if she were dead: almost never appearing in public or big gala events after her abdication except for the 18th birthday of Princess Beatrix when she wore the Emerald Parure. Bless her. Juliana followed her example but had some public engagements through the years and attended some State Banquets. Beatrix duly followed the law from 2002 and . As for protocol. Thats for the receiving host to deal with. In practise Beatrix is considered a former reigning monarch and as such on par with Margarethe, Albert and Juan Carlos. Beatrix does not care for that title. I believe the others do!

The law around titles and membership of the Royal House needs adapting anyway in my view.
I think the sons-in-law of the King (assuming all three princesses are heterosexual) should all become HRH prince [firstname] of the Netherlands, prince of Orange-Nassau. The husband of Amalia should be HRH the Prince(-consort) of Orange and after her succession HM the King.
Anything else is discrimination on grounds of gender. It's like returning to Salic or semi-salic succession laws and I don't think anyone seriously would want that.

There is a clear distinction between the monarch and a former monarch.
HM the King (Felipe VI, Philippe or Frederik X) HM the Queen (Letizia, Mathilde or Mary) HM king Juan Carlos/ Albert II HM Queen Sofia/. Paola/ Margrethe II
In the Netherlands Beatrix would have become what she will be known as after she dies: Queen Beatrix. Her son became HM the King and her daughter-in-law HM the Queen.

And Beatrix, having been a reigning queen, should have been seated next to Queen Margrethe. Queen Sofia was a queen consort.
