A few days ago the Society of Jewellery Historians published a very interesting paper on the ring given to Queen Mary by the Duke of Clarence & the bracelet given to her by George V.
For those who do not normally access Instagram or who have not yet found the paper, which is free to read online, I have done 2 posts on the other board.
In her books the Condesa de Romanones says that when she got engaged she followed the Spanish custom of an engagement bracelet for her and she had to buy her spouse a cigarette case. She eventually got a ring a little later. She makes it sound like an old idea but it can’t be due to the cigarette case.
